Give directly & double your impact for families in need

Your cash will be delivered to families living in some of the poorest communities in Africa, no strings attached.

The match has been filled – but you can help reach our new goal to deliver funds to another 850+ people in need.

This year, your donations have reached over 180,000 people across 13 countries – from families in remote Rwandan villages to Syrian refugees rebuilding after the earthquakes in Turkey.

Reaching our fundraising goal means unlocking $1M to reach at least 3,400 people through our poverty relief programs in Africa.

Here’s what your donation would mean to Florence (pictured working with her daughter), who’s waiting to receive her $1,100 cash transfer in Rwanda.

“My husband and I make ends meet by working in our neighbors’ fields, where we earn $1 a day. We have to go there every day to be able to buy food, save for our health insurance, and meet other basic needs for our family. As a small family, we manage to get what we need, but it is challenging to live without a stable source of income or a better job.”

“We are looking forward to receiving cash transfers. We plan to buy a plot of land and a cow as a source of food for our family. We’ll use the leftover funds to start a business selling crops in our neighborhood. We will save up until we have enough funds to finance the construction of our own house. This will be a great foundation to improve our lives.”

Here’s how far your money can go for Florence and other families in Rwanda currently living on $1 per day:

Cost (USD)Purchase
$4🐔 A chicken
$5📚 One semester of primary school fees
$8/each🛖 Iron sheets for a better roof
$15❤️‍🩹 One year of health insurance

$150-200🛖 House improvements
$200🚰 A water pump

Cash enables families in need to address their highest-priority needs and invest in their futures – from installing water pumps, to sending children to school, to purchasing their first mattress, and so much more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the match work?

All donations through this page will be matched (1:1, or 2X) until 11:59PM ET on December 31st, or until $250K in match funds is used. This is a true match, so if we don’t reach our $250K goal, the leftover match funds will expire.

Due to processing times, we’re unable to guarantee donations made via check, wire, DAF, stocks, crypto, or our international partners will be matched.

If you’re interested in making a match pledge for future campaigns like this or would like to request we run a match campaign in your country, reach out to us at [email protected].

Can I make a recurring donation?

Please do! Recurring donations make our fundraising more consistent, which makes planning and operations more efficient. If you donate with a recurring donation today, only the first payment will be matched.

How much of my donation will families receive?

Historically, 90 cents of every dollar has been delivered directly to people in need. This efficiency (total money delivered to recipients ÷ total money delivered + transfer costs) varies by program.

The other costs of delivering transfers are those required to deliver the funds themselves, prevent fraud, and provide customer service to recipients via in-country staff.

What is GiveDirectly?

We’re a nonprofit that lets donors send money directly to the world’s poorest, no strings attached. In the last decade, we’ve delivered your donations to 1.5 million people across 15 countries.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes, donations are tax-deductible in the United States. While only donations made via credit card, ACH, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are eligible to get matched, we also accept checks, wires, stocks, cryptocurrencies, and more.

Here are our guidelines on 2023 donation deadlines.

Reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions or for more information on ways to give.

Can I give from outside the U.S.?

If you’re giving outside the U.S., you can still give to this campaign online, but your gift may not be tax-deductible. You can donate via our international partners to claim tax benefits, but due to partner processing delays those donations will not be matched.

If you’re based in Australia, you can make a tax-deductible donation to our match campaign with The Life You Can Save.

If you’re based in the UK, you can give via GiveDirectly UK to double your donation and claim GiftAid while match funds last.

Can I sign up to receive funding?

In order to be as fair to all as possible, we select recipients using a systematic and proactive set of criteria that vary from country to country, and do not accept inbound applications for our international programs.
