Give directly for Giving Tuesday
GiveDirectly
Thanks to our generous match funders and online donors, we raised over $400,000 for people in poverty on Giving Tuesday.
Giving Tuesday may be over, but you can still donate directly to families in need to spend and invest how they choose.
Giving Tuesday is a big day for charities like GiveDirectly, but it’s just another Tuesday for people living in poverty. Get a sense of what this Giving Tuesday is like in Mozambique and Nigeria from people who received cash transfers from donors like you today (11/29).
Hassana in Kogi, Nigeria – 11/29
Hassana is among millions of Nigerians impacted by the country’s worst flooding in decades: “It came with force, and before we could act, all our farm lands were washed away, with many yet to harvest what they planted. It continued till our homes were destroyed. At that point we had to run for our lives.”
Hassana is going to use the first of two $112 relief payments to start a business selling fish. “Today, I’m excited – It has been a dream of mine to start this business, but I lacked the money to start it. The floods didn’t make it easy for me. This period was like hell on earth, but I’m now hopeful for the future,” she said.
Lucas in Nhamatanda, Mozambique – 11/29
“My living conditions have been unbearable. I have been going to sleep hungry so many times in my life. My house is not one I’m proud of. I can’t even have people over because there is nowhere to sit or even something to sit on.”
Now that he has received his monthly $40 cash transfer as part of a 24-month basic income program, Lucas plans to buy rice, chairs, and a solar panel to improve those conditions. “I’m very excited to have food and not worry about going to sleep hungry. With the chairs I will also be living in a dignified place and the solar panel will help light the house at night.”
Cash enables recipients to address their highest priority needs, from starting a business, to paying for surgery, to buying a secondhand motorbike for transportation, to paying rent. Give today to see your impact doubled.
Frequently asked questions
How can I get my donation matched?
Make a donation through this fundraising page
before 11:59 PM EDT on November 29th, and – while match funds remain – we’ll double your donation and send it to
people in need. This is made possible with funding from GiveDirectly’s generous match funders. While we cannot
match checks or crypto during this event, we appreciate those donations. This page will be updated when the
match is filled.
How large of a donation will GiveDirectly match?
Each donor will be matched up to a total of $10,000 donated on Giving Tuesday. If
you donate over $10,000, the first $10,000 of your donation will be matched. As an example, if you donate
$12,000 your donation will be matched for $10,000, making a total donation of $22,000.
Can I give a recurring donation?
Please do! Recurring donations make our fundraising more consistent, which makes
planning and operations more efficient. If you donate with a recurring donation today, only the payment made
today (Nov. 29) will be matched.
What program am I donating to?
Your donations this Giving Tuesday will be allocated to GiveDirectly’s Africa cash
transfer programs. Today, most of these funds are delivered as large, one-time grants to people
living in extreme poverty.

systematic and proactive set of criteria that vary from country to country, and do not accept inbound
applications for our international programs.
