Cash Relief for Flood Survivors in Mozambique

Help us send funds directly to Mozambican families impacted by the devastating floods

Heavy rainfall triggered catastrophic flooding across central and southern Mozambique, with 750,000 people affected. This means farms washed away, homes destroyed, and families displaced.

We’re preparing to deliver recovery cash to between 1,500 – 3,300 families in the hard-hit Buzi district in Sofala Province. GiveDirectly has worked in Mozambique since 2021, and has the systems in place to quickly deliver cash to impact families.

This emergency cash will help cover their immediate needs & recovery, such as:

  • 🍛 Essentials like food, water, & medicine
  • 🏨 Transport and shelter while evacuated
  • 💳 Bills for mobile phone airtime and healthcare
  • 🛖 Repairing damaged homes, farms, & businesses

We’ll use poverty and damage data to remotely target and enroll families

Using poverty and flood impact data in Mozambique, we identified areas with high needs. For poverty, we look at multi-dimensional poverty rates and food insecurity; and for damage, we look at flood extent, roads flooded, and estimated population affected. We then map out phone users based on cell tower locations and remotely enroll and pay them via mobile money.

Your donations will reach those in greatest need quickly and remotely

Donations through this page will go to our emergency cash fund, which goes to families impacted by disasters across the world as cash. Receiving money – without strings attached – supports families’ short term survival and long term recovery. Cash aid is fast and fully remote, letting families meet essential needs quickly and reaching them via digital transfers that don’t tax fragile supply chains or clog transit routes.

Cash aid allows survivors to meet their own needs rather than having others guess for them — which is why people impacted by a crisis say they prefer cash relief over donated goods.

Frequently asked questions

How will my donation be used?

Donations through this page will go to our emergency cash fund. We will draw from this fund if we are able to launch a response in Mozambique to send cash to impacted families. The fund will also be used to reach others impacted by disasters across the world.

Who would be eligible to receive money?

We will use damage and poverty data to identify the highest-need communities, and then enroll and pay impacted families. The exact process is still being determined and we’ll update here when confirmed.

How much would each family receive?

We’re still determining the size of the cash payment each family will receive to help them recover and rebuild their lives. The transfer amount will be designed to cover the cost of common post-disaster recovery items. We will update this page with more details when confirmed.

When would people start receiving cash transfers?

We’re preparing to deliver recovery cash to between 1,500 – 3,300 families in the hard-hit Buzi district in Sofala Province. We will update this page with more details when confirmed. In our past responses, we’ve delivered cash 2-3 weeks after the disaster.
