Help us send funds directly to Mozambican families impacted by the devastating floods

Heavy rainfall has triggered catastrophic flooding across central and southern Mozambique, with 684,000 people affected. About 392,000 people have been forced from their homes, many of which are vulnerable adobe structures, and there has been significant damage to health facilities, roads, and essential infrastructure. Now a major dam is at risk of failing, risking severe flooding to many more communities.

We’re currently scoping a response to deliver recovery cash to families in the hardest-hit areas in February. GiveDirectly has worked in Mozambique since 2021, and has the systems in place to quickly deliver cash to impact families.

This emergency cash will help cover their immediate needs, such as:

  • 🍛 Essential supplies like food, water, medicine, generators, and diapers
  • 🏨 Transport and shelter while evacuated
  • 💳 Bills for mobile phone airtime and healthcare

Your donations will reach those in greatest need quickly and remotely

Donations through this page will go to our emergency cash fund, which goes to families impacted by disasters across the world as cash. Receiving money – without strings attached – supports families’ short term survival and long term recovery. Cash aid is fast and fully remote, letting families meet essential needs quickly and reaching them via digital transfers that don’t tax fragile supply chains or clog transit routes.

Cash aid allows survivors to meet their own needs rather than having others guess for them — which is why people impacted by a crisis say they prefer cash relief over donated goods.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will my donation be used?

Donations through this page will go to our emergency cash fund. We will draw from this fund if we are able to launch a response in Mozambique to send cash to impacted families. The fund will also be used to reach others impacted by disasters across the world.

Who would be eligible to receive money?

We will use damage and poverty data to identify the highest-need communities, and then enroll and pay impacted families. The exact process is still being determined and we’ll update here when confirmed.

How much would each family receive?

We’re still determining the size of the cash payment each family will receive to help them recover and rebuild their lives. The transfer amount will be designed to cover the cost of common post-disaster recovery items. We will update this page with more details when confirmed.

When would people start receiving cash transfers?

We’re currently scoping the feasibility of a response and identifying communities in greatest need. We will update this page with more details when confirmed. In our past responses, we’ve delivered cash 2-3 weeks after the disaster.
