A. Who is GiveDirectly?
GiveDirectly (GD) is an International NGO that runs unconditional digital cash transfer programs across Africa for both development and humanitarian purposes. GiveDirectly is not affiliated with any political party, religious group or denomination and does not discriminate against recipients based on religion, tribe or ethnicity.

B. Where does GiveDirectly operate?
In Liberia our programs are implemented in Bong, Nimba and Grand Bassa. The education Stipend for 12th graders program is being implemented in all 15 counties of Liberia. Across Africa, We work in seven countries: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Liberia, Malawi, DRC and Morocco. Our HQ is in New York City and we have an office in London.

C. What is the Educational Stipend for 12th Graders?
This program provides a cash stipend to 12th grade students writing the WASSCE exam to meet the cost of transportation to school, daily food and other needs. The educational stipends program is an initiative of the Ministry of Education in partnership with USAID, and is delivered by GiveDirectly.

D. What is the source of funds for the Educational stipends program?
The educational stipend for 12th graders program is fully funded by USAID, and designed through detailed consultations with the Government of Liberia’s Ministry of Education.

E. Who is eligible to receive the stipend?
All 12th grade students registered to complete the 2020 WASSCE exam from public and private schools across all counties in Liberia are eligible.

F. How much will each student get?
Each student will receive a total of US$ 50 (10,000 LRD) paid in two installments of US$ 25 (5,000 LRD) each.

G. Do students need to have a mobile phone / smart phone to participate?
No, but students do need a SIM card that is registered in their name or in the name of a trusted adult.

H. How will students receive their stipend?
We send transfers using mobile money. We currently use both Lonestar MTN and Orange Mobile Money.

I. Will the money be paid back?
No. This is NOT a loan! Students will NOT repay the stipend given to them.

J. What is required for a student to get enrolled, i.e. any documentation?
Students who already have a SIM card registered for mobile money can go to educationliberia.org to provide their details for the program. Students who do not have a SIM card registered must have a student ID or other valid identification card (Passport, Driver’s license, National ID, Voter’s ID) to register for mobile money. Once registered for mobile money students must go to educationliberia.org to provide their details for the program.

K. How do students under 18 years old enroll in the program?
Students younger than 18 years old can provide the details of a trusted adult to whom the stipend can be sent.
