Send cash to SNAP families losing benefits before Thanksgiving
You can help families SNAP families keep food on the table
Families across the country are losing their SNAP food benefits this fall, even though most are still eligible.
As states roll out new documentation and recertification requirements, SNAP has become harder to navigate, and families who still qualify are falling through the cracks. Families are losing benefits over paperwork, not eligibility, leaving them without food on the table. So far, over 5 million people have lost their food benefits, including more than 1 million children.
The timing couldn’t be worse. Many low-income families cut off from SNAP have less than $25 on hand. One missed payment could make putting food on the table this Thanksgiving out of reach.
GiveDirectly and Propel are sending cash to families who have lost their SNAP benefits, in time for Thanksgiving. Your donation will help families cover basic needs such as groceries for the holidays while they navigate these program changes.
Your donations will reach SNAP families quickly and remotely
Propel, an app more than 5 million households use to manage SNAP, can see when a deposit doesn’t arrive, often before the family does. During last year’s SNAP pause, GiveDirectly and Propel partnered to deliver over $12 million to 246,990 families who missed payments. Here’s how your donation will reach families:
- 🔍 Detect: Propel spots a household that missed their SNAP deposit in October.
- 💵 Bridge: GiveDirectly sends families $100 the week of November 9, in time for Thanksgiving, to spend however they need.
- 📲 Reconnect: Propel provides tools and resources to help eligible families re-enroll in SNAP.
Cash lets families decide what they need most. Here’s what the families we reached during last year’s SNAP pause spent their money on:

Funds will go to families like Rashe’s, who received cash during last year’s SNAP pause
Rashe, a mother of seven in Pennsylvania. Her youngest child was just one week old when benefits were paused.

“When I realized I wouldn’t be receiving SNAP benefits, I immediately panicked. I was scared and afraid, not for me, but for my children. What worried me the most was the thought that my family might go to bed with empty stomachs.”
“Before receiving assistance, I would spend my very last dollar on a meal for my family, even if it meant not paying the bills. When I saw that Propel and GiveDirectly were funding families to help during the SNAP delays, I could finally take a deep breath of relief.”
“That assistance meant everything. It gave us another day to sit down and eat a full meal together as one big family.”
GiveDirectly and Propel have a proven model for reaching families fast
Since 2020, GiveDirectly and Propel have delivered more than $220M together to families across the U.S.:
- After the Los Angeles wildfires and Hurricanes Helene and Milton, families were invited and enrolled right in the Propel app.
- During last year’s SNAP pause, we sent nearly $12M to families in less than two weeks.
That same speed and trust will allow us to help families keep food on the table this Thanksgiving.
