When people learn about GiveDirectly, they often ask us how recipients react to receiving cash no strings attached or how someone feels when we give cash to their neighbors but not to them. We'd love to fly people to Kenya to see for themselves, but short of that we decided to ask a whole village and share their answers here, unfiltered and uncut.
From December 7th to December 11th, three GiveDirectly field officers, cameras in hand, went back to a randomly selected village that had started receiving transfers in late 2013. They asked those who had received transfers as well as those who hadn't about their experiences—both good and bad, and both individually and as a village. Below are the stories and pictures we captured, representing about 80% of village members (some weren't home when we visited).
We encourage you to spend time looking through these and drawing your own conclusions. Those who received transfers are marked with a "GD" in the upper right corner.
