About 30% of GiveDirectly staff on the GiveDirectly Kiryandongo refugee team are refugees themselves. GiveDirectly has historically been hesitant to hire staff directly from the community for fraud mitigation reasons. For this project, however, working with refugees who are familiar with the physical layout and cultural context of the settlement in addition to speaking multiple languages not native to Uganda was a significant advantage. In order to address fraud concerns, GiveDirectly has implemented a two step enrollment process and employs an independent internal audit team.
